The fantastic growth of the Internet
Today there are over 1.97 billion Internet users the world over and the estimated annual growth of the Internet is 50% to 60%. Information that is stored on the Internet (such as pictures and emails) doubles every 18 months - the digital universe is currently 800 000 000 000 000 000 000 bytes big. That is like a pile of books that stretches to the moon and back again!
To manage the amazing growth of the Internet we will have to upgrade from IPv4 to IPv6. As it is today, IPv4 can handle approximately 4.2 billion Internet connections, and this won’t be enough in the future. In tomorrow’s Internet when IPv6 is up and running the number of Internet connections can be increased to over 340 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 billion.
Currently the Internet absorbs over 5% of the total world supply of electricity, in laymen’s terms that is the equivalent consumption of 60 million households (the total population of the UK), or the annual production of 90 coal fired power stations, 135 million dollars or 900 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
